Paul the Octopus is dead! Long live Paul the Octopus!

The World Cup is now well underway, we're 11 matches in and the results from our paid subscriber service have been excellent. However, we're not just about plain picks and more often than not you can pick up a lot more by reading the analysis and match day notes carefully.

France are a prime example of this and ahead of the match we wrote:

Honduras were scarily physical in the 0-0 draw with England, you would have thought it was a World Cup decider and not a friendly ! You can be 100% certain that the French will have taken note and probably had a word with FIFA about it, referee Sandro Meira Ricci of Brazil has been appointed and I doubt that was a coincidence . He is pretty strict and free and easy with the red cards, giving one every two games in "international" fixtures, including in a French U20 World Cup game last year, sending off an Uzbekistan player and awarding the Les Bleus two penalties to boot ! Not saying there was anything suspicious in that game, just that he is very unlikely to stand for any nonsense from the Hondurans like we saw last week, if we are going to get a red card shown this weekend, it could well be here.

The official selection was France -1.5 but Wilson Palacios also obliged in the 43rd minute when he received his marching orders.

In fact we're not short of examples like this over the last few days.

Brazil v Croatia

Official selection - 1 unit draw half time-Brazil full time double result 3.75 -4.0 general quote , there is 4.20 in a place and plenty of liquidity at 4.0 + on Betfair.

Mexico v Cameroon

Official selection - 1.5 units Mexico -0.25 ball 1.96 asian line/Sportmarket.

Spain v Netherlands

I suspect this will be the archetypal cautious opening game, that traditionally goes double when it involves two highly ranked European teams, a draw would not surprise, but if forced to make a pick, I would opt for the half time stalemate at circa 2.0.

Chile v Australia

Official selections: 1.5 units Chile -1.25 ball 2.14 asian line/Sportmarket and 1 unit both teams to score 2.20 -2.375.

South American teams have a wonderful record, as you might expect, against Asian conference teams, but Chile are definitely better offensively than defensively and we might well see both teams score, 3-1 with Cahill heading one for the Aussies would be just about perfect. 3-1 and Cahill scored with a header !
