THURSDAY JANUARY 10TH

The football today is very uninspiring and I am going to pass.

Having said that, I can tell you that Atletico Madrid are back to pretty much full strength, at least squad wise, not sure exactly what their starting eleven will be (probably very strong) for the short trip to Getafe .  Ahead of their visit to Mallorca on Sunday night I wrote ...."They arrive short of a few star names and their three named strikers have just four goals between them this season, the irreplaceable Falcao (16-17-1), Arda Turan (16-4-5), central defender Miranda(16-2-0) and Emre (6-0-1) are all missing and two players added to the squad, Pedro and Saul, have seen just 27 minutes of top flight action between them this season, 29 minutes over their entite (young) careers."  Well. all four are back in the squad for tonight, in their absence the team played pretty well and created plenty of chances and they would really appeal this evening, if they did not already hold a 3-0 first leg lead.

We have probably the busiest and most interesting weekend of the last two months ahead of us, with a lot of football, NFL playoffs, US golf and the Australian Open , although I am not yet sure how involved we will be in the tennis over the opening couple of days. Several of you have also asked about the African Cup of Nations, mainly those who took the 84-1 on Zambia last year ! Anyway, I will definitely be doing a preview, similar to last year's and will try to send it towards the end of next week (Thursday or Friday), it gets under way on Saturday,January 19th. I can't promise that it will be as good as this, only three bets were mentioned and two won at odds of 85.0 and 6.50, but I will try to come up with something out of the ordinary !

Two emails on Friday, the first will be at the standard time of 10.00 (UK) and will focus solely on Ligue 2 ( which is looking like four selections, two of them strong at the moment), the second at 17.00 will effectively be the first Saturday email and in that, I will also update the schedule for the rest of the weekend.

PGA TOUR: SONY OPEN

This is a long established golf tournament, which has been held at the Waialae Country Club since the mid sixties, it switched to a par 70 a little over a decade ago and has become a real "horses for courses" event since then, with first timers struggling and the same old faces doing well year in and year out. We have 23 rookies in the field this week and over the last three years, none of the 67 first timers have finished in the top ten , it will be very hard for any of this year's new crop to get competitive and they have to be left out of calculations.

We are looking for someone who is accurate off the tee, has good GIR stats and who can play in the wind, strong play on Par 5 's ( only two, but both "easy holes-one of which offered up 39 eagles last year) will be a bonus. Wind is notoriously difficult to predict, but is forecast to be worse early in the week and then fade a little over the weekend, so I am also keen on someone who tends to shoot low early in the tournament.

I have three golfers to discuss, XXXX XXXX, XXX XXXXXX and Carl Pettersson and I will take them in reverse order.

Petterson played in The Hyundai earlier this week, so, as discussed yesterday, that means that he sat around for three days and then played 54 holes over Monday and Tuesday this week, that will mean limited prep time on this course, but that should not be a problem as the Swedish golfer is a regular here and knows the layout well. The competitive golf can also be an advantage especially early in this tournament, also he played very solidly in Maui and did not drop a shot to par over the last 32 holes, for which he was six under . He was 5th here in 2010 and 2nd last year, when he opened with a 65, his first round scoring is ever improving and he has ranked 56th-31st-18th on Tour for scores shot in Round 1 over the last three years. His last nine starts have been ultra consistent, never finishing lower than 37th, he posted six top 20 finishes, including two top 5's. I was very keem on him to go well this week and was going to suggest a big bet at circa 21.0 + ,hope for another solid start and then review our position after a round or two, maybe looking to trade out. However, I have noticed that the years he has gone very deep here, were those he did not play in Maui and it could be that the transition between the two courses is not ideal for him and that is just enough to make me swerve him. But I will not be happy if he opens with another 65 !
