Vegalta made the midweek notes and played well enough in a 2-2 home draw against FC Tokyo ahead of which I wrote ..............
FCT have little to play for in the league now, they are almost certain to finish 6th and they also are off to the Champions League and play in Qatar next week . Sendai are coming off their best performance of the season and probably the biggest shock in the J-League with that 4-0 win away to second placed Gamba Osaka. They played well, everything they tried worked and they set up perfectly to beat Gamba, but will need something different today and at home they have really struggled and are still winless. They have created only 4 BC's as hosts in their last 5 starts and are a total 15- 53 for ITB attempts, but of course, blew those numbers out of the water in Osaka. This is tough, they showed us something we had not seen before on Saturday and FCT are distracted and Vegalta have actually won the last 4 h2h meetings here in Sendai and with an 8-1 goal difference. Their home form and numbers are a (big) concern, but if there is any value it has to surely be with them.
However, they again failed to notch the elusive home win and remain without a victory in Sendai since November 30th last year, fast closing in on 12 months. This will also be their third start inside 7 days and all against top 6 opposition and they must be a little weary.
Antlers have played just one game in the last 18 days so will just about be the freshest team in Japan and will take heart from their performance in that, a 1-1 draw with runaway leaders Frontale a game in which the 6th placed team ( see table above) were arguably the stronger team, or at least on a par, with more ITB attempts and level for BC's and on target shots, which few teams manage against the champions elect.
Five games left to play for Antlers and it is difficult to see how they can finish top 3 and clinch a Champions League spot without winning four as a minimum. Good news for them is that they have a great record in this stadium, winning on their last three visits and scoring 11 goals in the process and after today, their final four starts all come at home, in Kashima City. Antlers are 9-0-7 on the road and that all or nothing approach should serve them well against a tired opponent who are not enjoying home comforts.
