Miami Open : WTA : Ons Jabeur- Sofia Kenin
Photograph is of a very young Kenin with Kim Clijsters , with the Belgian superstar showing once again why she is known as one of the nicest women to have every picked up a tennis racquet !
Ons Jabeur is another player who would have let out a little sigh when she saw her likely R3 opponent, she is 0-5 h2h with Kenin , 0-10 in sets and in eight of those she has won just 4 games or fewer. We have gone with Kenin 2-0 in sets in this match up twice , the last two meetings coming at the Australian Open and US Open last year, notes on both were included in the latter ..............
I would be a little pissed if I were Sofia Kenin, she is 21 yo the top ranked US player in the world (#4) and won the only slam played in 2020 so far, the Australian Open and she has been shoved out onto the second court so that Serena , Sloane and Keys can play on Arthur Ashe and that might further motivate her today and in this tournament.
Anyway, this is a rematch of the Australian Open quarter final ahead of which I wrote .............. Ons Jabeur is the first Arab woman to make a slam quarter final and that is a very big deal for her and a breakthrough for her nation (Tunisia ) and continent. She has a variety of shots and her odds feel big, but at the end of the day she has never previously found her way into the top 50 after almost a decade on Tour, it is hard to get away from the thinking that she has now done enough and for me, her service issues are going to hold her back against the better players, as she needs so much else to go right to win. Jabeur rarely makes more than 55% first serves, her average for the last 12 months is under that and she is often around the mid 40's and with quite a big drop off in speed between her first and second, that is not good enough against the best returners. Sofia Kenin has been groomed for stardom since she was 5 years old and at 21, is four years younger, already established in the top 20 and is likely to move to a career high ranking after this week and to inside or very close to the top 10. Kenin has won the two fast court meetings between the two and I expect her to win and to get stronger the longer this one goes.
Kenin won that 4&4 without playing her best tennis, but I was on the ball with those serve comments, Jabeur won only 37% on SS and was serving those 30KM slower and it just puts too much pressure on getting her first serve in against the very top players, we saw that last week against Azarenka. Kenin is actually 4-0 h2h and has yet to drop a set to Jabeur and lost only more than 4 games once. Kenin in 2.
Jabeur's second serve stats are still bad , she won just 29% against Naomi Osaka in her AO loss and that is always going to hold her back in these kind of contests and this is a terrible match up for her.
2.25 units Sofia Kenin to win 2-0 sets 2.39 Pinnacle /Sportmarket Pro.
Good luck !
