UEFA Champions League: RB Salzburg- Chelsea
I have written recently about being unimpressed by Chelsea recently , they showed little at Brentford last midweek and the Bees hardly franked that form at Villa Park on Sunday and the Blues took an age to get going at home to Manchester United at the weekend , where they might easily have been a goal or two down and then failing to hold on to a lead when they did finally score. They are top of Group E with 7 points, but only one ahead of Salzburg and the two shared the points at Stamford Bridge, this is not an easy place to come and the hosts now play these group stage games with less carefree abandon which is a change this season. But they impressed against Milan here and we touched upon all that ahead of their home game with Zagreb earlier this month ...........
I have often written about how strong Salzburg are at home in Europe and also their fearless approach to games in general, attacking Napoli, Liverpool, Bayern, Atletico and Seville on the road in recent seasons, for example. Dinamo have also regularly made the Champions League notes, usually as one of the top teams in qualifying and they have done really well, pretty much budgeting to reach this stage of competition, or going very close each year. However, their run usually ends in failure at the group stage and the five times they have reached it since 2011/12 , they have been last in the section each time and their road record has to be seen to be believed! They are 0-1-15 with a 6-49 goal difference, failing to score in 12 , conceding 2+ in all 16 and losing 14 by at least two goals! Salzburg will be pleased with their two points, a 1-1 home draw with Milan and road draw at Chelsea by the same scoreline. Against the Italian champions they posted 16 attempts on goal, were 2-0 for BC and won xG by 0.75 goals.
The 1-0 win in that doesn't do the Austrian champions full justice , they won xG 2.53-0.65 and were 3-1 for BC's and 13-6 ITB, but their very young squad (average age of the starting 11 was under 23 years) is talented and continues to improve game on game in the Champions League. They are unbeaten in over 20 months at home in domestic and european ties, that's 41 games and includes visits from Bayern, Milan and Sevilla (when they were good!). Chelsea dont have to win to progress, they can seal the deal at home to poor travellers Dinamo on Matchday 6, of course, they would like to get that done today, but it is not that simple, this is a very difficult place to win, against a team who are young and still improving and more savvy this season on this elite international stage and odds are big, so I am not sure that I have any option but to go with .......
