The Bundesliga now looks set to return to action on May 15 after Germany's Chancellor, Angela Merkel, who was originally thought to be insisting on a two-week quarantine for all clubs before the league can resume , has now agreed to reduce that to 7 days and allowed the actual start date to be decided by the DFL (German Football League) ,who will hold a general meeting by video conference on Thursday where representatives from the clubs will finalise details .

The period of isolation could be undertaken within specialised training camps, as players get up to speed ahead of a return to action.

The Bundesliga will become the first of Europe's top leagues to restart since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, matches will be played behind closed doors as expected.

German politicians believe restarting play in the first and second divisions to "limit the economic damage" for the 36 clubs is "acceptable"and gave the proviso that restarting match activity must be preceded by a quarantine period, where appropriate in the form of a training camp. The influential DFL football league has long urged restarting play, which it says is vital for a sector that employs 56,000 people in Germany.

German clubs stand to recoup €300 million ($325 million) in TV rights if they are allowed to contest the nine remaining match days of the Bundesliga season and this will at least partially solve many of the financial problems clubs face with at least 13 of the 36 Bundesliga and second-division sides facing insolvency if the season does not restart fairly quickly. Twelve of these 13 clubs have already guaranteed the fourth and last instalment of this season's delayed television rights money to creditors.
