I previewed Sao Paulo's home game with America last week and spoke about the effects of their Copa camapign and dire need for three points , despite having rested a couple of senior players ...........
 
Sao Paulo are not the first team to let their Serie A form dip due to Copa Libertadores involvement and they have picked up just five points from their last five league starts and have fallen to mid table. They lost their home first leg Copa semi final 2-0 this past midweek and have little chance of turning things around in the return leg in Colombia and now need to turn their focus to domestic matters. They travel to Corinthians and Gremio next , who are a combined 11-1-1 at home and SP do not have another home game for three weeks, which is a "lifetime" in Brazil and have to find a way to win this and stay in contention for a top four finish .
 
Good news for them is that they host America who have already lost nine times and sit at the foot of the table having scored just nine goals all season (none in their last four starts). The visitors are a "perfect" 6 defeats from six starts (11-2) goals difference against teams in the top half the table and they will have to significantly up their level of performance to get anything from this. They also played in midweek, with a home cup game against lower league opposition, they obviously took that pretty seriously with nine players from the last league start, being involved, but they still had to toil to a 1-0 win against third tier opposition.
 

I expect odds to drift on the host, once some people see or write a little about their missing players, they have decided to rest three of the more senior players and are without a host of others due to injury or suspension and have only named 19 in the squad for today, when 22-23 is the norm. Having said that, it will be pretty much the "usual" backline/keeper and Cueva and Centurion return after being cup tied/suspended in midweek and they should still have enough quality to win this. America have not conceded inside 20 minutes in their last three road defeats and it is easier to see the hosts trading at much bet odds early "in running".
 

They did take 35 minutes to breakthrough, but won 3-0, they lost the Copa return 2-1 against Nacional in Medellin on Wednesday, where they played the final 15 minutes or so with nine men and also had to endure a 15,000 km round trip. They have named a bigger squad today of 22 players and it includes several who did not play in midweek, but most made the arduous journey and they will be without Jonathan Calleri who has seven Copa and Serie A goals this season ,Alan Kardec who scored twice against America and who moved to China on Thursday and Paulo Henrique Ganso who joined Sevilla yesterday. Tough week, everyone will be drained, they have lost a lot of offensive threat and it is very difficult to see how they can be as up for this derby game as Corinthians who have won four in a row scoring ten goals and who have had a free midweek to recover and prepare. The hosts have dominated recent h2h meetings here, winning the last four and scoring 13 goals.
