Premier League: Everton- Southampton
Everton have two games in hand on most of the Premier League, they would move level on points with neighbours Liverpool in 6th with the win this evening and winning both, would take them up to 4th.
They have not won at home in the league in 2021, losing four of five starts here at Goodison Park , including 2-0 to two bottom four clubs in Newcastle United and Fulham. In all competitions they have conceded 11 in their last four home starts.
Last four starts ............16-35 ITB, 8-9 BC's, 13-21 on target attempts, 4.93- 7.04 xG, average league position of opponent ..........6.75.
In the first half at home they are 5-6-1 with an 11-7 goal difference, but after the break here they are a poor 2-3-7 with a 6-13 goal difference.
Stand out stat: They are 0-5 (scored-conceded) through the middle third of home games (31st-60th minute).
Southampton are 14th , 7 points above the drop zone and early season success and promise has now shifted to just trying to stay out of a relegation scrap and giving full attention to the FA Cup where they have a win-able quarter final later this month.
They have conceded a frightful 24 goals in their last 8 league starts (just 19 in 17 games prior to that).
Last four starts.............26-25 ITB, 7-6 BC's, 14- 18 on target attempts, 3.74-5.82 xG, average league position of opponent..........11.25.
They are 3-4-5 on the road in both first and second half play.
Stand out stat: Their best period away from home is the middle third (31st-60th) when they have an 8-7 goal difference (6-20 through the other 60 minutes or so) and that is of special interest as it mirrors when Everton are most vulnerable.
H2h : Saints have not won in 8 league visits to Goodison, but have posted three draws and scored in seven and if we include a cup game, 4 of the last 6 meetings have finished 1-1 after 90 minutes.
Team news: Everton have very few issues, but Southampton will be without William Smallbone, Michael Obafemi, Kyle Walker-Peters, Ibrahima Diallo ,Theo Walcott ,Takumi Minamino and Oriol Romeu. That sounds terrible, but to give it some context, only two of those named (KWP and Romeu) started in the reverse fixture which was played back in October which Saints won 2-0 in one of their best performances of the season.
