Clermont- Brest
Bourg en Bresse Peronnas 01- Racing Club Lens
We can normally expect more goals in all leagues at the end of the season, especially in games where there is nothing at stake and Ligue 2 is no different, this penultinate round has produced 50% of "overs" in the last three seasons , with 30% having at least four goals. Games last week produced 2.7 goals on average, which is almost half a goal up on the seasonal mean and we can expect more of the same today in general terms.
Brest and Lens would not usually be the first teams on your list when looking for goals, but now is time to throw the shackles off and relax a little and their presence in these two "friendly" fixtures mean that we get a "price".
Having said that, Brest have scored in their last five road games and four of those have produced at least three goals. Their recent home fixtures have been the usual low scoring encounters that Brest favour, but they have been hosting teams battling for survival or promotion, it is perhaps too easy for them to revert to type in familiar surroundings, on the road they can play with more freedom and enjoy themselves.
Lens promotion dreams ended last weekend and I feel that today can go two ways for them, either that with the pressure off they can show what they are really capable of , or, and this is probably more likely on the road, that they will be feeling a little sorry for themselves and will save any remaining energies for next weekend and their final home game of what has been a transitional, but quite successful campiagn. BEBP will be delighted the way their first season in Ligue 2 has gone, they have never been in trouble, flirted with the promotion spots in early season, went quite deep in both cups where they collected a couple of top flight scalps and effectively secured survival with 7-8 games to play, they would snatch your hand off if more of the same were offered for next season. Their games have produced the second highest number of goals in L2 and they will want to entertain in their final home start, against what they would view as a very big opponent. Prior to this season they had only ever played third tier football and only four campaigns at that level and are happy if they can attract 2,500 supporters to home games. Lens have won all three major domestic titles in the last two decades and their last two home games were watched by 30,000 + crowds, that gives you a good idea about the respective size of the two clubs and BEBP will not need any further motivation for this.
Only one team's matches have produced more goals than BEBP and that is Clermont, they have averaged 2.92 per game, only the top two have scored more and only BEBP and Creteil have conceded more. They have been in touch with the top three all season and broke into it several times, but lost their way when January was turning into February and never quite got back on track. They have conceded in their last nine home starts, seven of which went "over", the two "failures" were when they themselves failed to score (twice in last three) , but that seems unlikely a third time for such a potent attack, in what is a friendly fixture. Clermont will have to do without top scorer Famara Diedhiou, but fellow strikers Dugimont (pictured) and Laborde have 13 goals between them , 11 of which have come since the turn of the year, along with five from midfielder Adrien Hunou and they look to be preparing for life after Diedhiou.
