Two months ago I previewed a City home game with Orlando where my notes included..........
These two met here in New York in mid March with the host winning 2-0, that they win on home soil along with a clean sheet is fairly rare and Orlando have scored in all three subsequent road games (5 total) and twenty times in nine starts home and away. They had also scored 8 in four previous away trips to face NYCFC , were denied by the woodwork and three saves on that last visit and it is difficult to see them coming up short again in that department tonight.
NYCFC are now 16-5-2 here at Yankee Stadium, but have conceded a goal in 22/28 home starts, they claim to have made some defensive adjustments this year and they seem to have worked at home but not on the road where they have actually conceded 17 goals which is the second highest in MLS and my feeling is that the home numbers are the blip and normal service will soon be resumed. Their keeper Sean Johnson has made the second most saves in MLS which along with that scary road tally, tells you that they are giving up plenty of chances.
NYCFC won that 3-0, but Orlando did hit the woodwork three times, OC have also gone into freefall since then and cannot buy a win, City have played five home games subsequently, won four, conceded in two, they have improved at the back, that is undeniable, but not to the degree the home goals against column indicates.They are 21-6-2 here in NY, conceded in 24/34 and giving up 23 in 11 on the road, including three at Seattle (see preview above) last week. They have back to back road games after today and will want to stay in touch with leaders Atlanta whom they trail by four points with a game in hand and also get back on track.
Vancouver are wildly inconsistent, but have goals in them when things click and ended a very dry spell with six goals in two games last week on home soil and can offer some resistance to a degree, but they have conceded 27 in 11 away starts (2.45 pg) and NYCFC have scored the same 27 in 11 home games ( 2.45) and it is easy to see 2-3 as a minimum for the host. The only previous Whitecaps visit here was two years back and ended in a 3-2 defeat and I see this playing out similarly . Whitecaps will also have one eye on their Canadian Championship final first leg with Toronto FC on Wednesday which carries with it a Champions League spot.
