Canada are qualified, Mexico and the US are all but in Qatar and Costa Rica look booked for the play off spot (cannot lose that).
However, there is still a bit to play for and following the results in CAF yesterday, Canada need to win in Panama to book a place in Pot 3 of the draw for the finals, if they come up short, Tunisia will move into Pot 3 and the Canadians will drop to Pot 4.
Mexico and the US are guaranteed to be in Pot 2 as long as they qualify automatically and to do that, both simply need to avoid heavy defeats today.
The US can only fall to #4 if they lose by six goals, their players have put in a lot of time, effort and air miles to get firstly to the US (for those based in Europe) then to Mexico City, back to Orlando and then on to San Jose CR, all in the last 7-8 days. They will also be under a little pressure from their clubs with most having two games scheduled in the next week and many of the bigger clubs do try and convince the coaches of the NT to rest/not risk players for "meaningless" games and this kind of falls into that category. The US have nothing to gain by losing by 5, or drawing this fixture.
Everyone in this Confederation likes to beat the US, they just do and, for a variety of reasons. Costa Rica always raise their game in this fixture and wait for it, have won the last nine h2h meetings as host with a 23-6 goal difference and conditions are going to be hot, steamy and sticky this evening in San Jose, which should further favour the home side. The hosts also arrive in a rich vein of form, being unbeaten in six starts ( 5 wins) and all things considered, the odds for this game make no real sense.
We could make a lot of similar comments about Panama -Canada, but the hosts have blown a good chance to finish top 4 ( won just once in five starts) and their last two results, a 1-1 home draw with Honduras and 5-1 loss in the US at the weekend, make dismal reading and confidence must be at a low ebb. Also, Canada look very strong right now and as already discussed, three points will secure a place in Pot 3 and it could made a big difference , as Qatar are obviously the weakest team in Pot 1 and cannot be drawn against another Asian team, of which there are three in Pot 3, it could result in a slightly better draw anyway, raise the profile of a country who have been in the football doldrums fora long time and with a 20% chance of drawing Qatar. It feels like a good incentive.
