US Open Tennis: WTA : Caroline Wozniacki- Anastasija Sevastova
We have seen before that some of these players fall out of love with the game, retire too early, realise what they are missing and return to the sport, often with a renewed hunger and that is certainly the case with Anastasija Sevastova who will reach her highest ever ranking after this tournament, the 26 yo retired for almost two years, before returning in 2015, she has had a golden summer making two finals and winning 20 main tour matches this year. This is her first ever slam QF, she has never even really been close before, her 2016 has been deyond her wildest dreams and, we have spoken about this before, subconsciously, she will probably feel she has done "enough" and ten hugely competitive games in a couple of week, she made the last 16 after going through qualifying at New Haven, must be taking a toll. She has had huge straight set wins over Garbine Muguruza and Johanna Konta, but the latter has issues we have discussed this last week or so and Muguruza is always likely to be vulnerable early, which we took advantage of at Wimbledon. That is not to denigrate what Sevastova has done, just to give it a little perspective. She has struggled against the better players when things have not gone her way early and has suffered bagel sets (6-0) to Karolina Pliskova, Simona Halep (twice) and Annika Beck recently, sets can quickly run away from her.
We discussed Caroline Wozniacki in R3..........
Briefly, Caroline Wozniacki is not a player I side with too often, but I expect her to win this with a degree of comfort. She leads the h2h over Monica Niculescu 6-0, all on hard courts and in straight sets, only losing four games (never more) twice. Even though the pair have not faced each other for almost three years, that gives the Dane a huge psychological edge IMO. The Romanian has played in 34 slams and only made it beyond R3 twice (losing in R4 both times) and will already be pleased with her progress here, by which I mean that Wozinacki will be disappointed to lose today, Niculescu probably less so, although she would never admit it and is probably unware of it !
Wozniacki is 167-31 over her career on hardcourts v players ranked 51+, 28 of those wins have come since the start of last year and 23 of those (82.14%) have come in straight sets. She sounded quite chilled in post match interview and seems to be putting less pressure on herself than in the past. Wozzy in two.
She won that in straight sets and Sevastova might break into the top 40 after her exploits in New York, but is very much of that same 51+ level. Wozniaki served and returned really well to beat Madison Keys in R4 and is in her 5th US Open quarter, she won the last four all in straight sets, all by at least six games and with an average winning margin of 7.75 games. She is a quick starter and that feels ideal against Sevastova .
1.5 units Caroline Wozniacki -4.5 games 1.98 Pinnacle/Sportmarket Pro.
Good Luck.
