WTA: Indian Wells: Arnya Sabalenka- Angelique Kerber
Angelique Kerber did not like being world number one, she is not the only player to struggle with the crown and all the fuss and hoop-la and level of expectation which goes along with it, others thrive, but some prefer just to be a liitle less under the spotlight. We have seen her win a slam (Wimbledon) since losing that top ranking and I do not doubt her year is planned around the big four events nowadays and we have have not seen a deep run at one of the more mundane tournaments, even a premier, for some time and maybe we won't. Bit early to be hard and fast about that, unlike Serena, but that is my thinking.
Arnya Sabalenka (pictured) is young ,hungry and very gifted, with a huge game.
At the Cincinnati Open late last season I looked at her year to date ............
Aryna Sabalenka made the final at Eastbourne this summer after which I wrote ..........
20 yo Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus made the final at Eastbourne last week, losing narrowly to Caroline Wozniacki 7-5 7-6 she served for both sets, but beat Karolina Pliskova, Radwanska, Mertens and Goerges en route, four very big scalps. She is a tall, very strong girl with a big serve and massive ground strokes and looks the real deal, what she lacks is big match experience and knowledge to see out matches, she should/could have beaten Wozniacki. Sabalenka's serve ,as big as it is, is (still) vulnerable, but her return is amazing .
She avenged that loss to Wozniacki last week, beating her in Montreal, before losing to Mertens in three sets, she beat Johanna Konta here in R1 and is putting some really impressive results against top players together and if Karolina Pliskova plays like she has done recently ( see yesterday's notes) ,can repeat her win on grass over the Czech. Pliskova's win over Radwanska was much closer that the scoreline indicates and almost every game went to deuce and infact, I would say that she has to up her level to avoid defeat.
Then, ahead of a match with Petra Kvitova at the US Open ...............
Sabalenka won that, then beat Garcia and Keys (in Cincy) before losing to Halep in the semis, she then won New Haven and is 11-1 on the surface since Montreal (Rogers Cup) losing only to the world #1 in that sequence , she is a youngster who has the world at her feet, a big game and no limits on what she can achieve and once you get a young sportsmen riding the crest of that wave and momentum, it is better just to jump on for the ride and see how far it takes us/them. I see her chance as greater than 40% today.
She beat Petra Kvitova 7-5 6-1 and then took clubgowi favourite and eventual champion Naomi Osaka to three long sets, Sabalenka then won both Wuhan and Shenzhen to finish the year. She has now broken into the top 10 and with very few points to defend here or in Miami next week , top 5 calls !
Sabalenka is 7-2 on outdoor hardcourts versus top 10 opposition. Kerber has a 15-10 record in Indian Wells, but is 2-5 versus top 20 here and one of those wins was 6 years ago (1-3 since).
1.75 units Aryna Sabalenka -2 games 1.98 Pinnacle/Sportmarket Pro.
Good Luck.
